Performed on 30 June 2021, “The Family”, Entre Act’ #4 explores family relationships with both humour and cruelty, navigating unconditional love, unspoken truths, guilt, resentment, and the difficulty of letting go of those we love. In the first story, Paul and Edith are still living with their adult daughter, Tangua. When she announces that she wants to postpone her PhD and remain at the family home for another eighteen months, her parents struggle to conceal their despair behind reassuring words. After Tangua leaves for Beijing, Paul and Edith finally begin to enjoy a little peace and quiet. But when a radio report announces the crash of a flight arriving from China, they suddenly fear the worst. Convinced that they have lost their daughter, they are overwhelmed by guilt and regret... until Tangua walks through the front door, very much alive. Their relief is immense, but short-lived. While unpacking her luggage, her parents discover a large sum of money and realise that their daughter has been hiding part of her life from them. This final revelation tears the family apart for good and finally prompts Paul to make the decision he has avoided for years: to throw his daughter out. The second half, inspired by “Family Resemblances” and “What's in a Name?”, invites the audience to a birthday celebration in a family-run bar. Henri eagerly awaits the arrival of his wife, Yolande, while his sister Cécile tries to endure his sexist remarks and constant life lessons. Betty, Deny and the rest of the family witness a series of seemingly ordinary conversations about relationships, birthday presents, a paralysed dog and long-established family habits. But beneath the humour lie deep emotional wounds. A single remark is enough to bring years of frustration to the surface. Cécile accuses her brother of always having been the favourite child, the one who was forgiven everything, while she was expected to make sacrifices and remain in the background. The birthday celebration soon descends into a bitter settling of old scores, exposing all the resentment that has built up over the years. A bittersweet family comedy, both touching and sharp, where love is often expressed clumsily, where people hurt one another without always meaning to, and where the most difficult truths inevitably come to light.
