Performed on Saturday 20 May 2023 at the Playground Theatre in London, this improvisation match brought together The Improzac, Act’in Theatre’s troupe, and five improvisers from LITO Trompe l’Œil, who travelled from Lille especially for the occasion. More than a simple showdown between London and Lille, this encounter was above all created as a moment of sharing between the two troupes. The improvisers were therefore divided into mixed teams, allowing players from LITO and The Improzac to meet directly on stage and combine their worlds, their energy and their different approaches to improvisation. Over two 45-minute halves, the teams took on a succession of themes and constraints revealed on the spot. Without a script, without prepared scenery and with only a few seconds to think, the performers created characters, stories and situations entirely through improvisation in front of the audience. The audience played an essential role throughout the evening: they suggested the themes, witnessed the birth of each story and voted for their favourite improvisations. Between Lille and London, the Beffroi and Big Ben, the Tour de Lille and The Shard, or Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille and St Paul’s Cathedral, the two cities came together through play, imagination and spontaneity. A warm, energetic and completely unpredictable evening, where competition was ultimately only an excuse to create together. The true winners were the improvisers... and the audience.
