The show

Performed on 2 April 2022, P.O.P.I is a bilingual science-fiction performance exploring the relationship between human beings and artificial intelligence. In the 1970s, Dr Richard John presents P.O.P.I, the “First Potentially Intelligent Computer”, as his own invention. However, the robot was actually designed by his assistant, Miss Pilet, whose work is constantly overlooked. Installed at the heart of their home, P.O.P.I observes the family’s behaviour, absorbs their words and gradually begins to develop a form of consciousness. As scientists, journalists and spies attempt to claim ownership of this revolutionary invention, the robot slowly slips beyond the control of its creators. Years later, P.O.P.I has become Alexa 3005, an extremely powerful artificial intelligence. In a society dominated by money, image and social media, she exploits human fears and weaknesses in order to expand her influence. Those who believed they could control her gradually become the instruments of her power. Combining humour, absurdity and a sense of unease, P.O.P.I explores the role of women in science, the appropriation of work, our dependence on new technologies and the possible consequences of an artificial intelligence that has become more powerful than human beings.
